Concept

Ride the Cyclone follows a group of choir students who have suddenly died in a rollercoaster accident. A fortune teller named Karnak will allow one student to live again. The students perform for one another in order to prove their humanity. Ride the Cyclone presents serious subject matter in an absurd manner; therefore the design must balance these two states.

Character Reels

Every character in the show has an introduction narration performed by Karnak. A film reel was created for each character to showcase their respective personalities using After Effects. Images were collected from the actors’ childhoods, and yearbook style photos were shot and edited.

The Life of Penny Lamb

The climax of the play occurs when Jane Doe gets reincarnated into Penny Lamb. The cast then sits down and watches a two minute video of Jane’s life while singing. For this number I collect images of the actress who played Jane and combined them with images of a loved one’s life and stock photos. The life and death of Penny Lamb was created using Premiere Pro.

Talia

During Talia, Mischa sings a song to his lost love. I wanted to honor the original production by having Talia dance behind Mischa for this song. I filmed the two of them dancing with a green screen and edited the footage using Premiere Pro. I worked with the costume designer to create a dreamy Ukrainian wedding atmosphere.

Space Age Bachelor Man

This Ziggy Stardust inspired number takes place on a magical planet with alien cat women. To accent this absurd tale, a spinning night sky and a zoomed in star motion graphic was created. Both were made in After Effects. The latter was color edited in Qlab to create a serious of multicolor stars during the chorus.
