Concept
Fefu and Her Friends showcases a group of women influenced by, accepting, and rejecting the larger culture’s understanding of women. The lighting design distinguishes the time of day of the three act play: morning, afternoon, and evening. This is achieved through variations of angles of light that mimic the setting sun, color temperature variations, and the use of practical lighting elements such as wall scones and window/offstage specials.

Significant lighting changes occur when the characters Fefu and Julia experience hallucinations. During these scenes, the color palatte turns to include purple, blue, and orange.
During the final moments, Julia dies under Fefu’s spiritual hand. Fefu triumpantly holds up the rabbit she frantically hunted in her backyard, and Julia slumps over with blood dripping down her forehead. The confusion in this moment is highlighted through dramatically dim lighting, aswell as foot lights placed at the four corner of the set.
